Telekommunikation Lindau builds complete city network using RAD technology to transition from copper to fiber

MUNICH -- Telekommunikation Lindau GmbH, the local operator in the German town of Lindau on the banks of Lake Constance, will be deploying solutions developed by RAD Data Communications in a new high speed, citywide data communications network that it is currently building to serve customers in banking, government, industry and small and medium-sized enterprises. The revolutionary feature of this new Gigabit Ethernet network is its original copper-based backbone, which will gradually be replaced with fiber optic cable. The core of the solution is DSL technology, which significantly increases the transmission capacity of copper lines to produce sufficient bandwidth. RAD's HTU-E1 series modems increase the transmission speed of each copper twisted pair up to 2 Mbps. These high speed modems also support transmission over distances of up to 4 kilometers without the need for any repeaters. The backbone consists of several multiplexed lines between the various computer centers that provide the required bandwidth for most applications. "The Lindau example proves that, despite falling prices for lines and equipment, fiber optic is not always the most economical solution for the transport network," explains Volker Bendzuweit, Managing Director of RAD Germany. "Whenever the installation costs for new lines appear prohibitive, RAD's DSL technology can offer a sound alternative, since it is capable of using the existing copper infrastructure," he adds. Not only will RAD's modems be used, but the entire network will consist completely of RAD equipment: RAD's modular Megaplex-2100 integrated access multiplexers will enable E1 data, fax and phone traffic to be carried over the copper lines, which will be gradually replaced by fiber optic cable. Whenever that occurs, the nodes will be served by RAD's FOMi-E1 fiber optic modems. RAD's DXC access nodes, with integrated DSL and fiber optic modems, serve as a multiservice platform for fiber optic network segments, helping to integrate them with copper-based network segments.
