Qualcomm Adds the Ching to ChaCha

5:40 AM -- Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM)'s investment arm Qualcomm Venture Partners pumped US$3 million into ChaCha, it announced Wednesday, bringing the SMS question-and-answer company's funding to $75 million.

That's a lot of dough for a company that performs essentially the same function as the Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) search bar. Basically, you text a question to ChaCha's short code and get back a human-guided -- but computer-generated -- answer. I've tried it when I was out and about and wanted to know how many stamps it'd take to mail a package. It took a few attempts, but eventually we got there. And, hey, it was free.

You have to hand it to ChaCha. The profitable company had an impressive 2010. It boasts nearly 32 million unique users each month and three million questions answered daily. Its record, achieved last month, was two million mobile SMS questions answered in one day.

ChaCha's success shows the power of SMS (and the laziness of mankind). SMS may be the oldest app in the book, but it's still going strong enough to pull in some serious Cha-ching for ChaCha.

Hmmm...boasting, "three million questions answered daily" but, "Its record, achieved last month, was two million mobile SMS questions answered in one day".

That's bad math - did they actually give you this data in their marketing? Or is there a transcription error here?

Thanks. That's the missing link.

Now, if I'd only asked ChaCha through SMS... maybe it would help them hit a new record. :o)

re: Qualcomm Adds the Ching to ChaCha

Sorry that was unclear, but ChaCha answers questions via its website as well. So that's 3 million questions per day through all the outlets - mobile web, web, SMS, apps - and a record of 2 million questions on SMS alone in one day.
