SAN JOSE, Calif & SINGAPORE -- Foundry Networks®, Inc. (Nasdaq:FDRY - News), a leading provider of high-performance enterprise and service provider switching, routing and Layer 4 - 7 traffic management solutions, announced today that SP Telecommunications Pte. Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore Power, has selected Foundry's complete Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) solution to provide broadband services using PowerLine Communications (PLC) technology. SP Telecom has deployed Foundry's BigIron® Layer 3 switches for the PLC system, the first in Singapore where a service provider is using Power Line transmission to provide data bandwidth. PLC technology enables broadband telecommunications signals to be sent over underground low voltage cables, leveraging on existing infrastructure to deliver broadband services to locations throughout the island. SP Telecom is working with two Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to provide broadband access via this leading-edge technology to a mix of selected commercial, residential and educational users in a trial that commenced on April 11, 2002. Those participating in the trial are able to access the Internet at a speed that is about 30 times faster than the current broadband capability. The trial will last for 3 to 6 months. Foundry's BigIron Layer 3 switches connect SP Telecommunications' three carrier offices through Packet-Over-SDH (POSDH) to provide high performance broadband services, including Internet Access, Voice-over-IP (VOIP), and multimedia services. SP Telecom can cost-effectively implement a highly scalable and reliable network on existing SDH infrastructure by using Ethernet-Over-SDH (EOSDH) features on Foundry's equipment. In addition to high bandwidth interfaces and wire-speed switching capacity, Foundry's BigIron Layer 3 switch also offers a rich feature set, including Quality of Service (QoS), bandwidth management, security, wire-speed accounting & billing, and Self-healing Automatic Protection Switching (APS) capabilities. "SP Telecom has successfully built an extensive optical cable duct infrastructure, and PLC technology leverages on the existing infrastructure to provide both a `last mile' alternative for broadband access and a `final inch' alternative to current home and office networking technology," said Mr. Teo Heng Lam, General Manager of SP Telecom. "Foundry has provided us with a suitable Global Ethernet Metro networking solution to meet our needs." Foundry Networks Inc.
