Former CTIA Head Could Be Next FCC Chief

President Obama nominated former CTIA head Tom Wheeler as the next chairman of the FCC Wednesday. "I can attest to Tom's commitment to harness the power of communications technology to improve people's lives, to drive our global competitiveness, and to advance the public interest," said outgoing chairman Julius Genachowski in a statement. "The FCC's role has never been more essential, and with Tom's deep policy expertise and his first-hand experience as a technology investor, he is a superb choice to advance the FCC's mission of promoting innovation, investment, competition, and consumer protection." Genachowski will step-down in mid-May, at which point Commissioner Mignon Clyburn will serve as acting chairwoman, the first woman to hold the post. Wheeler served as CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) from 1992 to 2004 and served as president of the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) from 1979 to 1984. He has also been a serial tech investor who sits on several company boards. He has his own blog where he writes on telecom and tech issues. — Dan Jones, Site Editor, Light Reading Mobile

re: Former CTIA Head Could Be Next FCC Chief Awesome and fitting to have an ex CTIA head to now lead the FCC. Tom's a class act too. Roll on the wireless revolution.
