SUNNYVALE, CA--Finisar Corporation announced today that it has delivered its first Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) Optical Transceivers. The first of these new 1.25 Gb/s transceivers have been delivered to a leading provider of high-performance Gigabit Ethernet switches. This delivery coincides with the Company's demonstration of a 2.125 Gb/s version of the Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver to a second company, a market leader in Fibre Channel switches. "We believe that Finisar is first to market with this important new technology," said Christian Urricariet, Finisar's Product Marketing Manager.

These Gigabit-rate transceivers are fully compliant with all published portions of the Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) Multisource Agreement (MSA), in which Finisar has been a very active participant. They are also fully compliant with both the Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel standards. Occupying less than half of the board space of their GBIC predecessors, these transceivers allow networking equipment manufacturers to cost-effectively double the port density in their data-communication systems while ensuring superior EMI performance.

Optical transceivers are utilized by networking manufacturers in their switches, hubs and adapter cards for LAN, SAN and WAN applications to convert gigabit-rate electrical signals to optical signals and vice-versa for transmission over fiber optics.
