Faster 3G

6:30 AM -- Vodafone UK is upgrading its high-speed packet access (HSPA) network to 7.2 Mbit/s in six new U.K. cities this summer to cover an additional 3 million people with the mobile broadband service. So far, Vodafone has only covered London and some U.K. airports with the 7.2-Mbit/s service. (See Vodafone Extends Coverage.)

The new cities that will have the high-speed mobile broadband service by fall this year are Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, and Reading. Downlink speeds will be up to 7.2 Mbit/s and uplink speeds will be up to 1.8 Mbit/s.

Heavy Reading's senior analyst Gabriel Brown has been trying out Vodafone's 7.2-Mbit/s service lately. See what he has to say about it here.
