Will We Ever See Telco 2.0?

3:00 PM -- "A leopard," my granny used to say, "never changes its spots."

So you've got to wonder if the telecom service providers of today can ever really come to grips with a Web services world where new services are created on the fly and customers need to be served immediately or they flip to another offering.

The problem for the operators is that there are many wise folk who believe the telcos need to embrace what's become known as a Telco 2.0 strategy, or they'll be relegated to the role of bit pipe players and likely go out of business.

But what's happening now is that traditional telecom operators are being offered the opportunity to grasp the Telco 2.0 opportunity by the throat and revamp themselves. These opportunities come in the form of cloud services capabilities and offerings like Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU)'s Application Exposure Suite, which, in theory, should make it easier for them to engage with external applications developers. So will they take a leap of faith? Become true next-generation service providers? Well, they will and they won't. On the surface, some will go some way towards the concept, while others will talk about it but commit too late (or never)... and then be consigned to the history books.

As for my granny... well, she also used to say, "If you can't be good, be careful," so maybe we shouldn't take too much notice of her idio(ma)tic outbursts.
