Stat Attack

9:00 AM -- I'm calling it the "Barcelona Effect" -- the craziness that ensues in the run-up to the world's biggest and most important mobile industry event of the year, Mobile World Congress (or 3GSM to its friends). (See our preview site.)

In advance of next week's jamboree in Barcelona, we published a blog earlier this week citing the size of the mobile sector -- how much it's worth, and how many people have mobile devices globally just now (around 2.3 billion in June 2007). (See How Big Is Mobile?)

But that's only half (or rather, about two thirds) of the story, according to Telecom Trends International Inc.

It has just issued a press release with the headline, "Four Billion People Do Not Have a Mobile Phone."

I suspect more than 6 billion people will not read the press release...
