How Big Is Mobile?

1:40 PM -- Ever wondered how big the mobile/cellular industry has become, now that everyone, their children, and their pets seem to have at least one wireless subscription?

Well, there are more than 2.3 billion mobile users in the world -- though they account for more than 3 billion subscriptions, because some very needy folk have two or even three accounts, according to Informa Telecoms & Media .

And according to researchers at French outfit Idate , the global mobile market was worth $860 billion in 2007. That total comprises $671 billion worth of services, $129 billion in device sales, and $60.2 billion in mobile infrastructure sales.

No wonder next week’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona is such a monster. Check out the latest news around that event at our special Mobile World Congress 2008 Preview Site.
