Telefónica SA, MegaFon, Fortumo, Telenor ASA, Etisalat, Nokia Corp. and High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) are among this week's early news-makers.

  • Telefónica and Russian operator Megafon have struck a global strategic partnership deal that will see the two operators engage in joint R&D and use each others' networks to deliver services to their customers. For more details, see this press release.
  • Mobile payments platform specialist Fortumo is working with operator partners Telefónica and Telenor to help make it easier for smartphone users to pay for goods and services using their mobile bills. See this press release for more details. (See Telefónica, Telenor Team on APIs.)
  • Neelie Kroes, the European Union Commissioner for Digital Agenda, is aiming to have proposals for the creation of a single European telecom services market ready for consideration by the European Parliament within a year, she said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. The proposals would not include a single telecom regulator, however.
  • Etisalat has made the highest bid for Vivendi's stake in Maroc Telecom, which the French media and communications giant is trying to sell, reports Reuters.
  • Nokia has taken fresh legal action against HTC, accusing the Taiwanese handset maker of infringing its intellectual property rights, according to this Reuters article. — Ray Le Maistre, Editor-in-Chief, Light Reading
