Will Verizon Get Real?

4:50 PM -- A.L. Friedman, our Contentinople scribe, has reported on the barriers between Verizon Wireless and RealNetworks Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK), in trying to bring their mobile music services together.

For, Verizon it's about data pricing, says Real. Sure, fair enough -- they want to charge money for (and profit) from their network. But isn't it also about having access to open Web-based services on your mobile device?

Once again, this brings up a big question for me: What's the future of the mobile walled garden, in light of the advent of the iPhone? The iPhone, with its elegant and open Web browsing capabilites, may represent the beginning of the end for niche mobile services such as V Cast, as they are inevitably forced to move to more open Web standards.
