Where Are the Missing iPhones?

11:50 AM -- There's been a furor amongst iPhone watchers about the discrepancies between Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s sales figures and how many of the handsets AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) has actually activated on its network. Analysts are estimating that over a million iPhones could have been unlocked by their owners and used on networks other than AT&T's.

So where are they all going? All over the world if the latest figures from Netapplications.com are any indication. The firm found evidence of iPhone mobile browsing from Aruba to Vietnam, definitely not countries where the iPhone has been officially launched yet.

Despite Apple's attempts to discourage unlocking -- it likely loses revenue on phones operating outside of its carrier partner networks -- I have to wonder if the craze will benefit Apple in the end, by bringing the phone to a wider audience than AT&T ever could.
