Waiting on LTE

4:25 PM -- Well, rumors of a Nov. 15 launch for Verizon Wireless 's initial LTE markets proved a little premature, didn't they?

Nonetheless, it would make sense for Verizon to get LTE out there before the holiday season gets into full swing. The operator is clearly close to launching its initial 38 markets -- ads for LTE modems already appear to be leaking out. I'd expect to see the marketing effort from Verizon to be amped up in the next couple of weeks. From firsthand experience, I already know that people are talking about -- and waiting for -- the launch in NYC.

From what I've heard, a December launch is in the cards. I would expect that to mean early December if Verizon can't go commercial before that.

I would also expect them to switch on additional markets as soon as possible. We know that Detroit was nearly ready so that will likely go live late this year or early next.

The quicker Verizon switches on LTE, the sooner we'll see the operator lord it over AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) with "4G" ads. — Dan Jones, Site Editor, Light Reading Mobile

re: Waiting on LTE

In the telecom space, there are just so many examples of new technology taking much longer than initially anticipated.  We should only be surprised when projected dates turn out to be accurate.  Telecom moves at a snail's pace.  Checking in on a weekly or monthly basis on progress is a tortuous exercise.  The transition from 2G to 3G was slow.  The hardest part is having a seamless transition from one generation's infrastructure to the next.  There is growing acknowledgement on the part of vendors that the real wave of LTE may be at least two years away.

re: Waiting on LTE

You only get one chance to make a good first impression, so VZW certainly don't want to launch something that's not fool proof as possible.  If I had my spectrum analyzer out in one of those cities we'd surely see the RF up and burning already from their towers.  Unfortunately I'm not in one of the initial launch cities (Richmond, VA).

Maybe that will be a blessing, any kinks will be worked out before they rush their expansion.

There are a lot of 4G and we-might-as-well-call-ourselves-4G out there, if VZW makes a bad first impression they will lose 4G customers and it will take several years to get them back.

VZW please do not roll out 4G until it works with my 4G IPhone. Trust me VZW, you will mess you the 3G IPhone intro if 4G is announced too early. Take your time, perfect it - and come up with a good enterprise/indoor wireless solution when you do the ROW LTE roll-out.

re: Waiting on LTE

There's not a chance that Verizon will wait for an LTE-compatible iPhone to launch its LTE/4G network. An iPhone using that technology is unlikely to arrive before 2012. VRZN is launching LTE with a couple of modems to start with for laptop users by the end of 2010, they say.

If you're talking about a version of the current "iPhone 4G" that supports Verizon's CDMA 3G network, well, its down to Apple to produce a phone that supports that standard. Verizon already has a 3G CDMA network in place. Apple *might* launch that in the first quarter of 2011, we'll see.

Homer has been on TV for 20+ years drooling over donuts!  Seems fine to me!

Also, the cake is a lie.
