Newport's NSN Hopes

2:15 PM -- U.K.-based session border controller (SBC) vendor Newport Networks plc (London: NNG) is hoping to broker a partnership with Nokia Networks as it focuses on building up its reseller channels, according to industry sources.

Newport, which recently raised £6 million ($12.2 million) to keep itself afloat, stated in a recent filing with the London Stock Exchange that it "is in advanced negotiations regarding an agreement with one of the world's largest NEVs that is also a market leader in IMS solutions." (See Newport Stays Afloat.)

While Newport says it can't say any more about the ongoing discussions, EuroBlog has learned that Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) is the other party, and that Newport is keen to develop border gateway functionality that would work in harmony with the giant vendor's softswitch technology.

NSN is already working with Newport's main rival and clear market leader in the carrier SBC space, Acme Packet Inc. (Nasdaq: APKT), so it's interesting that the Finnish/German giant would feel the need to even enter into discussions with Newport.

If a Newport/NSN relationship is brokered, it'll be interesting to see the details and competitive reaction.
