The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) model was defined as the baseline standard for network and service convergence by wireline and wireless service providers. As service providers are continuously challenged to keep ahead of competition, they are enforced to lower prices frequently, generate innovative revenue streams, lower their OPEX, and constantly deploy new technologies to enhance the network as well as their service offerings. The ultimate solution to these challenges would be a miraculous switch to an all IMS based environment. However, IMS technologies aren’t available yet, nor are IMS infrastructure and network test-beds, not to mention miracles. Switching to IMS requires a transition from the commonly applied PSTN philosophy to “ALL IP” strategy, along with a large investment in infrastructure, equipment, Application Servers, and OSS/BSS components.
