AMSTERDAM -- Versatel Telecom International NV, today announced that it has tested, fine-tuned and implemented the Dynamic Packet Transport (DPT) technology of Cisco Systems for its high-speed IP backbone network. The DPT technology forms a scalable and cost-efficient solution to provide IP (Internet) services over Versatel’s own fiber optic network, without having to use the SDH and ATM layers and equipment in its network. The technology is designed to leverage Versatel’s fiber optic infrastructure by offering high quality data transport at speeds up to 2.5 Gbit/s.

“Faced with explosive growth in IP traffic, we needed to expand the capacity of our SDH-based network in order to keep up with the changing needs of our customers,” said Aad Beekhuis, Chief Operating Officer of Versatel. “By deploying Cisco’s DPT, we were not only able to offload traffic from our SDH circuits and ATM network but we now have the ability to scale our network much more easily and cost-effectively. Furthermore this network is ready to serve more value-added services, such as Voice over IP and IP VPN virtual private networks.”
