Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear

LAS VEGAS -- Verizon Wireless, the nation's largest wireless carrier, has deployed wireless network infrastructure equipment from Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT) (TSE:NT.) in Las Vegas and San Diego, the companies announced today. Part of an estimated US$500 million supply agreement for wireless and optical equipment announced last year, this new infrastructure is expected to provide additional features, increased digital capacity and improved reliability. Trials have already been completed, and the networks are already carrying live voice traffic in both cities. Both networks are designed to support evolution to third generation (3G) cdma2000 1XRTT, which Verizon Wireless plans to begin deploying later this year. With 1XRTT, the Las Vegas and San Diego networks will be capable of moving data at rates up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps), 10 times faster than generally available today.

"Verizon Wireless is dedicated to offering its customers the best quality network in the industry," said Ed Salas, vice president, network planning, Verizon Wireless. "The new network capabilities in San Diego and Las Vegas will help us to offer leading edge, cost-effective services to our customers and at the same time prep the network for 3G services."

re: Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear I'm surprised they even mentioned this 'win' for NT vs the $5B for Lucent. On top of that, no mention of NT's problems with Las America Broadband (aka InfoAmerica).

re: Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear So, Verizon buys 500M from Nortel and 5B (5000M) from Lucent. So, where's the Lucent story? Or did it come and go from the front page rather quickly....

re: Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear Obviously LR are getting paid by Nortel/have Nortel stock/have friends at Nortel.

re: Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear Hey,

Let's count all the articles coming out of OFC and see if Lucent gets any... or for that matter rate advertisers vs non-advertisers... cripes, people do this already and we know the results.

re: Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear also note, lucent is absent from the mention of notels 40G push this morning. ciena is quoted as saying they don't believe it yet (perhaps because coredirector is only a 640g system).

this is slipshod journalism at best. i like this site, but such oversights cannot be ignored. this is what fuels all the bias commentry on the message boards. maybe that is what LR wants in the first place?

re: Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear lightreading again loses credibility....The lucent deal is a major endorsement by a large player....readers should realize that the ultimate validation of technology is in the field and contract endorsements....Lucent is headed in the right direction.....

re: Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear Come on light reading, this is a QOS issue. Surely you cannot ignore the magnitude of the lucent deal with verizon.

this from a magazine that specializes in highlighting $20M contracts for startups.

re: Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear Exactly! A completed 40 Gb/sec trial with 40 Gb products on the horizon and no mention whatsoever. My other question would be - is Lucent actually presenting these products at OFC? If so, then there is no excuse for the omissions.

re: Verizon Wireless Deploys Nortel Gear Mr. Birdie...you posted this on another thread about a story on Zaffire...if your current post, about Lucent is true, Then that means that Zaffire is doing very poorly because they have no real customers, thus they have no Validation according to your philosophy?? Which is it ? Would you perhaps be talking out your arse?? hmmm??? Any wins by zaffire i missed?...didn't think so. ;-)

"Lightreading clearly has Zaffire in their cross hairs, and is hell bent on burning the company with bad press. Lightreading is not objective and their continued negative spins against Zaffire undermines the credibility of the entire site.
Zaffire's platform is the real deal, and lightreading will eat some crow very soon."

Or, perhaps NT didn't want to give away as many $$ on the contract (not to mention financing) Realizing that the slowdown in spending will eventually recover... they didn't want to get locked into 5 billion in products and manufacturing with extremely low margins.

LU would have done just about anything to be able to make a 5 billion $ announcement. The ultimate validation of technology isn't always in the contract endorsements (when equipment is being given away) ... sometimes it's in the margins.

I use to work for VZ. While there .. I noted a general propensity to focus on cost at the expense of quality and/or advanced tech. They know the position LU is in ... do you think they didn't use this as leverage when negotiating this contract?

I'd wait and see what kind of earnings LU generates from this contract before I'd start shining their shoes.</the>
