Verizon CFO Is a Tease on iPhone Timing
During the second-quarter call, Shammo made this allusion in the question-and-answer session: "With the rumor mill out there of a new phone in the fourth quarter, people may be waiting," he told listening analysts. (See Verizon Reports $1.83B Profit for Q2.)
Could that be referencing an iPhone launch toward the end of the year? Some took it that way, while others weren't so certain:
"Could that mean something else?" asked Light Reading's Ray Le Maistre as we swapped messages about the CFO's comments this morning.
What we do know is this: Verizon sold 2.7 million iPhones in the quarter and shifted 2.5 million 4G LTE smartphones. It sold 3.2 million LTE devices in total.
So clearly, the gap between iPhone and 4G Android sales is significantly lessened. iPhone sales were down 16 percent quarter-on-quarter for Big Red.
This alone puts the burn on Apple to get an LTE-capable iPhone out into the market this year, all teasing and hints from operators aside.
