SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Veraz Networks, a leading global provider of next-generation communication networks, announced its MIDCOM-based open standards initiative for Border Gateway Control (BGC) capabilities. As part of this effort, Veraz is incorporating session border control functionality within its carrier-grade softswitch platform for interoperability with MIDCOM-based border gateways. Leveraging Veraz's open and distributed platform, the Veraz BGC combines the core session signaling functionality, centralized call control and VoIP network protection without duplicating capabilities most suited for other network elements. Veraz initiative follows its tradition of open standards in softswitches and media gateways now being demanded by service providers globally. The same evolution is expected within the border gateway and border gateway controller market.

Based on the open standard Middlebox Communications (MIDCOM) protocol from IETF and supported by the Multiservice Switching Forum (MSF), Veraz's Border Gateway solution takes a modular approach to border control benefiting from network wide border control policy management and specialized, multi-vendor border gateways distributed throughout a carrier's network. In comparison, integrated, proprietary solutions reduce network-wide management and computing efficiency due to replication of core signaling functionality. The standards-based MIDCOM approach offered by Veraz separates the signaling and media plane efficiently to avoid duplication and provide a single point of enforcement.

As the BGC is incorporated into Veraz's distributed architecture ControlSwitch, it enables greater choice, higher performance, and lower cost. Based on a centralized management system, Veraz's solution is easier to use as it provides more control than a point solution. By choosing Veraz's Border Gateway Control solution, service providers receive a single network-wide view, reducing the cost and management complexity.

Veraz's Border Gateway Controller also leverages all the capabilities of the ControlSwitch protocol interworking. It can resolve most of the media incompatibilities that might arise from interconnecting IP devices, such as different codecs, various voice packet sizes and protocol incompatibilities.
