TV Over DSL Over Italy
FastWeb, the eBiscom SpA-owned service provider best known for its Ethernet-over-fiber services (see Top Ten Service Providers to Watch), went live with its 120-channel TV-over-DSL offer to all of its 120,000 DSL subscribers on August 30, the start of the Italian calcio (football/soccer) season.
Providing live league matches is a major part of the carrier's marketing push. FastWeb TV, which is already on offer to the company's Ethernet service customers (who each have a 10-Mbit/s connection), costs a mere €10 a month.
FastWeb's network planning director Mario Mella says the carrier set up the service in just four months with the help of its three DSL vendors, Alcatel SA (NYSE: ALA; Paris: CGEP:PA), Marconi Corp. plc (OTC: MONIY), and Siemens AG (NYSE: SI; Frankfurt: SIE).
