TOKYO -- Trend Micro Inc. (TSE: 4704, NASDAQ: TMIC), a leader in network antivirus and Internet content security software and services, announced today it has entered into an agreement to acquire InterMute, Inc., a leading developer of anti-spyware products, by Trend Micro’s United States subsidiary, subject to completion of due diligence. InterMute’s technology will further enhance Trend Micro’s anti-spyware solutions for business customers and consumers.

Spyware is a recognized, increasing security threat. According to IDC, 67% of all computers have some form of spyware on them, and in some cases, infected computers are host to hundreds of spyware programs (source: IDC Market Analysis, “Worldwide Spyware 2004-2008 Forecast and Analysis: Security and System Management Sharing Nightmares”, November 2004). Additionally, the challenges of dealing with spyware are becoming more complex. Customers need an effective solution to deal with spyware that they want removed from their systems but require the flexibility to choose how to handle “grayware”, those types of spyware that they may or may not want to remove such as adware. InterMute’s expertise and technology will further Trend Micro’s abilities to help customers in both of these areas.

“Trend Micro continues to be wholly focused on providing our customers with security solutions that offer advanced protection against unpredictable, malicious threats,” said Eva Chen, CEO and co-founder of Trend Micro. “Spyware continues to evolve and cause concern and damage, but not all spyware can be handled the way viruses and worms are. Customers need effective solutions to remove spyware, but must also be given the flexibility on how to manage it. The acquisition of InterMute further strengthens our ability to execute upon our anti-spyware strategy and their technology and products are entirely complementary to our own. We expect to deliver combined solutions to market quickly.”
