Telefónica Hugs Ovi

1:00 PM -- There is at least one operator that's not offended by, or afraid of, Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK)'s new Internet service, Ovi. Telefónica SA (NYSE: TEF) and the Finnish phone maker have just announced plans to collaborate on mobile Internet services. (See Telefónica, Nokia Partner, Nokia Stakes Claim on Services, and Nokia Launches Internet Services.)

The two companies will work together so that Telefónica users have access to both Telefónica's and Nokia's Internet services. The companies will work on a billing system and customize a multimedia menu from which users can access mobile Internet services from each provider.

A Telefónica spokesman says the partnership covers all of the operator's markets, but it's too early to say where the services will be launched first. It's possible, then, that Telefónica UK Ltd. -- owned by Telefónica Europe plc (O2) and home of the iPhone in the U.K. -- could soon be offering services from Nokia.
