TelcoTV in Space

11:40 AM -- In his opening remarks at TelcoTV this morning, Kevin McGuire, VP of business and technology at the National Telecommunications Cooperative Association (NTCA), channeled John F. Kennedy by comparing the rollout of IPTV services to putting a man on the moon.

"We choose to do these things," McGuire said, "not because they are easy, but because they are hard."

I thought telcos were deploying IPTV services not because it's hard, but because they need to reduce churn and become more competitive against cable and satellite providers.

Let's just hope that McGuire wasn't suggesting that by rolling out IPTV services, telcos will have to spend as much time and energy as NASA spent on the moon initiative, only to find at the end of the line that they were on a big empty rock.
