Telcordia Shells Out at Last

Telcordia Technologies Inc. has finally put its money where its mouth is and made a meaningful acquisition (see Telcordia Acquires Granite).

Having long stated its intention to expand through acquisitions, buying Granite Systems Inc., one of the leading inventory management systems vendors, puts some flesh on that strategy (see Granite Claims Rock Solid 2003, Telcordia's on the Prowl and Telcordia Dabbles With Dax). It also gives Telcordia a strong foothold in what is probably the hottest OSS market at present (see Report Names Inventory OSS Winners).

In a conference call today, Telcordia CEO Matt Desch wouldn't reveal the purchase value, saying only that it was a cash deal and that it wasn't a "distressed sale -- we paid a premium." Industry analyst Mark Basham at OSS Observer reckons the deal will have been in the $75 million to $100 million range, and that this is a good deal for Telcordia in a number of ways.
