T-Mobile Trials Femtos

12:25 PM -- T-Mobile (UK) has just started a femtocell trial in the U.K., T-Mobile International AG 's CTO, Joachim Horn, told Unstrung today at the Financial Times World Telecoms Conference in London.

Horn says T-Mobile is focused on the user experience for the U.K. trial: "Is it really plug-and-play, does it work with any DSL?" he asked as examples of what the operator wants to find out.

He said T-Mobile is also testing femtocells in Germany and Poland. "It's a very interesting technology."

Earlier this year, T-Mobile announced that it was a strategic investor in U.K. femto startup Ubiquisys Ltd. and that it was trialing the startup's ZoneGate femtocell in Europe, but it did not specify the country. T-Mobile also made a strategic investment in Israeli femtocell semiconductor startup Percello Ltd. (See T-Mobile Joins Google, T-Mobile Invests in Femto Firm, and T-Mobile Backs Femto Chip Startup.)
