1:35 PM -- T-Mobile US Inc. is once again trailing its larger rivals in the race to provide faster networks and fatter pipes to unwired users.

AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), Verizon Wireless , and Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S) have now announced proto-4G plans. Sprint is building out a WiMax network now and is likely to launch services this year. Verizon plans to start initial LTE services late in 2009; AT&T will follow suit in 2012. (See AT&T & Verizon to Use 700 MHz for 4G .)

Meanwhile, T-Mobile is still building out its 3G UMTS service on the advanced wireless spectrum (AWS) it bought for nearly $4.2 billion in 2006. (See Big Guns Dominate Spectrum Auction.) The 3G AWS network is expected to go live in major cities in the U.S. early this summer.

Don't hold yer breath for T-Mobile 4G, let's put it that way!
