T-Mob Outsources Backhaul

NOON -- Here's an interesting backhaul development: T-Mobile Austria has decided to outsource the management of its mobile backhaul network to Nokia Networks .
In the five-year managed services deal, Nokia Siemens will supply backhaul from T-Mobile's 6,000 base station sites in Austria. The vendor will select the backhaul technologies that will be used, such as leased lines, dark fiber, or microwave, as well as provide maintenance and field service for the backhaul network.
According to a Nokia Siemens spokeswoman, the deal is the vendor's first such managed services contract for cellular backhaul.
In Germany, T-Mobile has gone with an Ethernet-over-DSL backhaul solution from RAD Data Communications Ltd. for its HSDPA network. (See T- Mobile Busts Backhaul Bottleneck, Ethernet Backhaul Battle Brews, and HR Tracks Backhaul.)
