Sprint's New Palm

6:00 PM -- Sprint Wireless (NYSE: PCS) and Palm Inc. have set a new low in smartphone pricing in the U.S. with the unveiling of the new Centro, which is due to hit the stores in mid-October.

The Palm device has the look of a candy-bar phone but many of the features of a smartphone. These include mobile email support, YouTube Inc. video, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) maps, and the PocketTunes MP3 system. Sprint has an exclusive on the EV-DO gadget for 90 days, and you can get it in any color as long as its red or black.

I don't reckon this phone will be perceived as a huge threat to high-end gadgets like the iPhone. I do believe, however, that it will further help to ratchet up the pricing pressure in this competitive sector. Remember, the starting price for this device is $100 -- with a two-year contract. I wonder how low it can go.
