Sonusitis

1:00 PM -- Does Sonus Networks Inc. (Nasdaq: SONS) have the most rabid investor/fan base since Corvis?

I have to ask, given the tenor of the mail we tend to get anytime we (1) write about Sonus or (2) fail to write about Sonus.

It doesn't help that Sonus itself has trouble communicating. Its explanation of revenue deferrals was a torturous affair. And I know a company can't be blamed for its fans, but I have to wonder why it is certain companies attract certain kinds of investors.

The Sonusoids I've heard from recently are so obnoxious that they're reminding me of all the folks that used to dog us for not recognizing the greatness of Corvis.

And how'd that turn out?

The most recent mail flurry I got was because Light Reading was writing about Lucent Technologies Inc.'s IMS wins at several major carriers and not giving wall-to-wall coverage of Sonus's big victory at EarthLink Inc.

So I've got to ask: Are you guys winding me up? Or is there something we're really missing?

Interestingly, Sonus is down $0.83 (16.40%) to $4.23 this morning, and the normally shrill Sonus backers are eerily quiet.

re: Sonusitis I think you'll find that at least one Sonus stockholder has complained to Sonus inventor relations about the Light Reading coverage of the quarterlies, demanding that Sonus takes action against Light Reading for its choice of words. What joy...

But hey, we should all be thankful - you wouldn't get this in the laundry and dry cleaning business, eh?

Wow. I didn't know that.

I'll check my inbox for an official reprimand from Sonus IR.

re: Sonusitis Phun is Phil's middle name.

Why, just last week I thought the guy sitting in front of my 12 year old at the "Chicken Little" movie looked just like one of the Sonus investors, In My Opinion.

The only thing worse than not taking the press seriously is taking them too seriously.

Pride comes before the Phall.

re: Sonusitis I will go a little further- the investor conference LU confirmed it had NOT sold its class 5 when it had a conference after announcing its wins of IMS at Cingular, the same thing at BLS, then at SBC and the SBC one implied the softswitch- they say LU has one a major deal of components of its IMS portfolio-components include blah blah blah- network controller- blah- funny even when you read LU page on controller it says comes with or without a signaling module-WHAT?
LU does not have the class 5 softswitches for IMS as SONS is IMS compliant and LU will likely be configuring multivendor IMS implementations- why multivendor because SONS is best in breed and HA said that LU would pull through best in breed boxes- he did not mean LU class 5 switch which has zero major wins compared to SONS sales to ATT, AOL, NTT, VZ, BLS, T mobile, CINGULAR- which just bought more SONS tandem class4s, until next gen wireless is deployed there is no class5 on wireless-LOL, MOT partner, Samsung partner, MOT announced NTT deal, Samsung just announce Korea deal both using SONS class5s and GSX that old switch, JCOM, SOFTBANK BB, Earthlink- get real man- SONS missed by a penny and that penny comes back next CC- why the dollar drop how about the LR LU spin machine- who is taking bribes- more than one investor has complained about LR- you guys did not mention SONS got a deal with the govt, announced a deal with wireless provider in Japan yesterday, today announced deal via Samsung-1st of many, and that SONS could hit a grandslam and land every RBOC- saying SONS does not need them- yes they can do fine without them but when you have the best everybody wants you-in fact SONS is the defacto class5 softswitch being sold for pure VOIP- who is selling more LR?? LU is competing with them- give us some LU class 5 buildouts- how many billion minutes a month ride over LU class 5 softswitches- you guys seem to hire layoff meat engineers for writers- if some of your writers were on my engineering team they would be on probation...

Who is selling more what? Softswitches? Probably Sonus. Is it our fault for not covering them more? Probably.

But I should add: Sonus has dreadful PR, so they don't get the word out about their wins as well as they should.

All that aside, I still wonder what it is about the company that attracts the crazies.

re: Sonusitis Which crazies? BBC or crazy investors? The investors are just tired and scared. They just cannot stomach these false starts and drops. They do not know all the facts and find money easier to make elsewhere. In two years, all of this will be ancient history.

I like the BBC posts. He may be out there, but he knows his stuff.

re: Sonusitis Attracts the CRAZIES?? I take great offense to a magazine author characterizing me as a crazy. I am a pioneer in the telco and internet industry and have designed everything from X.25, SNA, TCP/IP stacks, ATM, Frame Relay, VOIP and many of the associated features for such networks for embedded line cards. You are the guys that are the crazies, in fact they always say "Those that can- DO!" "Those that cannot, write for LR or teach!"

Fact that the Yahoo board is full of crazies that site your articles is your problem NOT ME MAN.
Aske me any question on any networking protocol man- Tell me why the FECN implementation in Frame Relay is so bad compared to say the implementation of ABR in ATM with RM cells that set congestion at EVERY HOP- why is ABR idea way better- how could this be extended to the internet and TCP/IP- BTW if you solved this the internet would run about 100 times faster-LOL! Now WHO IS THE CRAZY?? You man- insulting a poster that has a legitimate gripe- YOU GUYS have NO CLUE how REAL THE LU IMS Stuff is- just their word- SONS stuff is in the field working-and IMS is down the road man- compliance is important now but do you honestly think IMS is meant to sell single vendor networks- NO SONS invented IMS so that they could sell pieces- they never meant to be a ONE STOP SHOP for every piec of telco gear...I am now officially no longer a reading of your RAG!

re: Sonusitis I am not a loony. Why should I be tarred with the epithet 'loony' merely because I have a pet halibut? I've heard tell that Sir Gerald Nabarro has a pet prawn called Simon - you wouldn't call him a loony! Furthermore Dawn Pathorpe, the lady show jumper, had a clam called Stafford, after the late chancellor. Alan Bullock has two pikes, both called Chris, and Marcel Proust had an 'addock! So if you're calling the author of 'A la recherche de temps perdu' a loony, I shall have to ask you to step outside!
