MUNICH -- The Siemens Information and Communication Networks Group (ICN) will participate with its optical network technology in the forward-looking .VIOLA. project. .VIOLA. stands for .Vertically Integrated Optical Testbed for Large Applications. in Germany’s National Research and Education Network (DFN). Its aim is to provide a test bed for intelligent applications in business and science. The project, which is being financed with ten million euros by the Germany Ministry of Education and Research and managed by the German Research and Education Network, is also the start of the E-Science Initiative which was announced in March of this year. Additional partners are T-Systems International and various research institutions, industrial companies and universities.

Siemens is contributing optical network technology for a field trial and innovative solutions for the dynamic networking of Gigabit Ethernet signals to the three-year project. Through networking at top speed, the German Research and Education Network will be able to provide its users, which primarily include universities and research institutions, with new flexible broadband services much more quickly. Previously, a customer request for a different bandwidth could take several weeks to process. SURPASS hiT from Siemens not only speeds up the provision time, but the increased bandwidth also supports many new applications, for example in the field of climate research.
