Shaw Launches Cable IP Phone Service in Calgary

Shaw Communications Inc. launched PacketCable-based IP phone service in Calgary on Monday. Called Shaw Digital Phone, the service includes unlimited local and North American long distance calling, local number portability, E-911 support and six calling features -- voicemail, caller ID, call forwarding, 3-way calling, call return and call waiting -- for $55 per month Canadian when purchased with another Shaw cable service. Shaw Digital Phone is available on a standalone basis for $65 per month. International calling is only available through a pre-paid plan, but the rates are attractive with calls to most European countries as low a 5 cents a minute and Japan at 6 cents a minute. Siemens is supplying Shaw's PacketCable call management server (CMS). Shaw says it will roll out its IP phone service in other markets later this year. Shaw's deployment follows Videotron's cable phone rollout in Montreal last month. Rogers, Canada's largest MSO, plans to begin offering phone service by mid 2005.
