MERRIMACK, N.H. -- Metrobility Optical Systems today announced that the Frankfort Plant Board, a municipality-based service provider, is utilizing Metrobility's Radiance technology to deploy optical Ethernet Internet access to business customers in Kentucky's capital city of Frankfort. Frankfort Plant Board offers 2Mbps of bandwidth for as little as $700 per month. Each additional 2Mbps costs $450 per month and can be provisioned in hours. This service is geared for organizations with 10 or more users, those utilizing CAD (computer aided design) or other large files, or are running an FTP, World Wide Web server. "We were initially considering offering T1 services to businesses as we formulated our business plan for Internet access five years ago. With Metrobility's Radiance system, we found that we could provide these same services and accomplish the required conversion from copper to fiber with the same product - all at 1/3 the cost of a T1 box," stated Gregory Roberts, SONET technician. "We now have the ability to change bandwidth requirements and are not locked into a 1.54Mbps T1 line." Frankfort Plant Board ties their network together with an Alcatel switch in the SONET ring to a Cisco Catalyst 2950 series in the Network Operations Center (NOC). The Cisco switch connects to Metrobility's Radiance R5000 which provides the fiber connection to a Radiance R400 at the customer site. The R400 converts the signal back to copper to the customer's switch. NetBeacon Element Manager allows the Board to monitor usage and adjust bandwidth at the Network Operations Center.
