Juniper's New Mantra

3:40 PM -- SAN MATEO, Calif -- This quotation has come up twice at the Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) analyst day, here: "Multiple network operating system versions are the silent killers of efficiency."

That's from Forrester Research Inc. , and apparently it's in a report that's been released just today. Juniper is promising us copies later in the day.

It's a dig at Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO), of course, because multiple versions of Cisco's IOS are living on routers worldwide. Juniper, by contrast, keeps customers to a single Junos implementation that's upgraded only on a strict quarterly schedule.

Apparently, the Forrester report includes a study that shows a 41 percent savings in operational expenses with Juniper compared to Brand X. That's for an enterprise case, by the way; I don't think the Forrester report looks at the service provider side.
