Juniper Beefs Up TeliaSonera's Core

Days after all the talk surrounding the Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) CRS-3, Juniper Networks Inc. (NYSE: JNPR) is making the first deployment announcement for its latest core router.

Juniper says Telia Company has deployed the TX Matrix Plus, the multichassis version of Juniper's T1600 core router. (See TeliaSonera Deploys Juniper.)

It turns out TeliaSonera is also a Cisco customer in the core, having deployed the CRS-1 in 2007. (See TeliaSonera Uses CRS-1.) Juniper notes that its TX Matrix isn't displacing any CRS-1s; rather, TeliaSonera has been using Juniper's T-series as well, and the time has come for one node in Frankfurt, Germany, to get upgraded to the multichassis option.

"It's not the last one. We're working with them on a number of upgrades," says Esben Dahl-Nielsen, a regional sales director at Juniper.

Juniper introduced the TX Matrix Plus a year ago, connecting up to 16 of its T1600 core routers into one big virtual router. (The original TX Matrix, launched in 2004, strung together four of Juniper's T640s.) (See Juniper Divvies Up the Core.)

That gave Juniper a boost in multichassis capacity, closing a bit of ground with Cisco's CRS-1, which can chain together 72 systems. (No one's gotten to that number yet; most multichassis implementations use two routers, and the largest are using around eight, Cisco officials say.)

Cisco did some core catching-up itself this week with the CRS-3, an upgrade that will let a CRS-1 accommodate 140 Gbit/s of capacity per slot. The original CRS-1 is limited to 40 Gbit/s per slot. Cisco plans to ship the CRS-3 in the third quarter of this year. (See Cisco Boosts the Core With CRS-3 and What's So Big About CRS-3?)

Nice win for Juniper, but the Marketing VP And PR exec should both be shot.  Why would you not have done this on Monday?.  Everyone knew what CSCO Had coming.  Where is Christine Heckart.?  Oh, at NetApp.  Maybe next time Juniper.

I think they actually deserve some credit.  The industry at large needed to digest the over extended "hype" around Cisco's CRS-3 announcement.  I mean common a maximum of 16 ports of 100-GigE in a 7' rack!  That's considered a major accomplishment that will change the Internet forever? All for 90K you say, what a deal. Who's kidding who.
