New IronWare software and upgrade enable IPv6 routing across the enterprise

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Foundry Networks(r), Inc. (Nasdaq:FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, today announced IronWare(tm) software release 4.1.00 and IPv6 routing upgrades for Foundry's FastIron(r) Edge X/XE and FastIron Super X/SX IPv6 hardware-ready models. The IPv6 routing upgrade enables a rich set of dual-stack IPv4/IPv6 routing services allowing network operators to implement and transition to IPv6 as required.

IPv6, the next generation IP protocol, is no longer the R&D work of a select few in the industry; it offers real value and benefit to service providers and enterprise organizations alike. IPv6 will enable an entire new generation of services. It will simplify network design and operations in the important areas of address management, allocation and assignment. IPv6 is the future of networking and it will power communications infrastructure for decades to come. With this in mind, enterprise network managers are anticipating and beginning to plan for network transition to IPv6.

Foundry's IPv6-ready FastIron Edge X/XE Series and FastIron Super X/SX family enable network managers to future-readies their networks with infrastructure that is ready on day one to support IPv6 services. Network operators may implement IPv4 services today and upgrade to IPv6 routing when required. Foundry's range of IPv6-ready products includes fixed-configuration edge switches and modular chassis systems enabling enterprise operators to implement IPv6 services across the enterprise, from edge-to-core.

The FastIron Edge XE (FES-XE) boasts the industry's leading IPv4 and IPv6 hardware-based routing capacity in a compact 1.5 rack unit (RU) routing switch. Known for its rich set of networking services and features, the FastIron Edge X Series has been an extremely popular routing switch family for enterprises and service providers worldwide. The addition of the FastIron Edge XE routing switch series addresses the needs of organizations and service providers who have edge and aggregation routing demands that are nearing the capacities of their current infrastructure and require a scalable and future-ready edge solution.

The FES-XE series is available in three models including fiber and copper configurations and port densities of 24- and 48-ports. All three models are upgradeable with a two-port 10 gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) module.

The new FastIron GS-STK and FastIron LS-STK models offer the benefits of "pay-as-you grow" scalability, ease of single switch operations and low initial cost of a compact access switch. These new switches are designed for organizations that require a scalable and secure "Intelligent Edge" solution that offers the cost, size and ease of deployment advantages of fixed-configuration access switches.

Highlights of the new FastIron GS-STK and LS-STK switches featuring Foundry's IronStack(tm) intelligent stacking technology include:



  • True "pay-as-you-grow" scalability

    • Increase or decrease port counts by simply adding or re-deploying switches in an IronStack stack

    • Flexibility to mix-and-match Power over Ethernet (PoE)-ready, PoE upgradeable and non-PoE switches in a single stack

    • A single IP address for the entire stack simplifying manageability

    • View and manage an IronStack configuration as a single entity via Foundry's IronView(r) Network Manager

    • Up to 384 PoE ports in FastIron GS-STK IronStack configuration

The FastIron GS-STK and FastIron LS-STK switches are powered by Foundry's proven IronWare operating software and support a rich set of advanced Layer 2 Ethernet services, static routing and IGMP and MLD multicast snooping. To protect against network abuse and to control network access, IronWare OS supports a robust suite of IronShield(tm) security capabilities including policy-based network access control, MAC-based VLANs, extended ACLs, MAC filters, denial of service protection, spanning tree protocol protection, embedded sFlow(r) traffic monitoring, IronShield 360 closed-loop threat mitigation and enhanced Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA) compliance capabilities.

Additionally, IronWare OS supports Base Layer 3 features for increased networking and configuration flexibility. Base Layer 3 features include static routing with RIP v1/v2 announcements, virtual and routed interfaces, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) relay and Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP). The switches will feature a de facto industry standard CLI for familiarity and ease of operations and will be manageable using Foundry's unified network management platform, IronView(r) Network Manager (INM).

(Nasdaq:FDRY), a performance and total solutions leader for end-to-end switching and routing, today announced Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE Plus) modules for its award-winning FastIron(r) SuperX/SX Series Layer 2/3 modular enterprise switches. Providing approximately 25 watts of power per port, PoE Plus is designed to power a new generation of higher powered Ethernet-attached devices. Foundry's FastIron SuperX/SX will be the industry's first IEEE 802.3at PoE Plus Draft 3.0 compliant switches providing interoperability with both PoE (IEEE 802.3af) and PoE Plus (IEEE 802.3at draft 3.0) compliant Power Devices (PD).

IEEE 802.3af PoE, today's standard for power delivery over Ethernet cable, has enjoyed rapid adoption since its introduction in 2003. Ethernet switches supporting Power over Ethernet (PoE) have become a popular edge solution for the enterprise, providing a cost-effective and efficient means for powering attached endpoints. PoE Plus is an emerging standard that specifies power delivery of up to 25 watts to IP endpoints. This is roughly twice the power of today's PoE delivery and will advance the intelligent edge by enabling a new generation of edge devices. Examples include IP video phones, IEEE 802.11n wireless access points (AP), high definition (HD) pan-tilt-zoom surveillance cameras and point-of-sale terminals.
