AlcaLu's Edge Upgrade

5:50 PM -- Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) isn't the only company upgrading its edge-networking gear. Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) has something up its sleeve, too, we've learned.

In talking with folks about the ASR 1000, it's come up that AlcaLu intends to beef up its 7750 Service Router with more functions like deep packet inspection, which would jibe with what Basil Alwan, president of AlcaLu's IP business, told Light Reading in November. (See AlcaLu Identifies Deep Packet Potential.) Policy management could be in the mix, too. The full package could be announced later this month.

Sounds like it's going to bear some similarity to Cisco's ASR 1000 announcement, in that AlcaLu will be absorbing outside functions into the router and will have a new processor to make it all go. Apparently, more than one can play at this game.
