Shanghai Telecom awards multimillion-dollar contract to Redback Networks for the SmartEdge 800 router to roll out MPLS VPN services

SAN JOSE, Calif. and HONG KONG -- Redback Networks Inc. (NASDAQ:RBAK - News), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking equipment, announced today that Shanghai Telecom, one of the largest provincial telecom authorities and a subsidiary of China Telecom has selected the Redback® SmartEdge(TM) 800 Router to roll out MPLS-based virtual private network (VPN) services. After five-months of extensive performance evaluation, the SmartEdge platform was selected over solutions from other major telecom equipment providers.Shanghai Telecom selected the SmartEdge 800 Router for its robust and scalable MPLS implementation, and modular software architecture that provides high reliability, flexibility and cost-efficiency that was needed to deliver scalable VPNs. Under the agreement, the SmartEdge platform will be deployed throughout Shanghai's broadband metropolitan area networks. The SmartEdge 800 Router supports Layer 3 VPNs by leveraging the unique "multiple context" capability of the platform. This feature will enable Shanghai Telecom to create multiple virtual routers providing total flexibility to support multiple VPNs, with complete customer visibility into its monitoring and configuration features.
