PARIS -- Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) will provide a next-generation VoIP network solution that will enable PTK, the incumbent operator in Kosovo, to deliver voice services to more than 50% of the total population. The state-of-the-art solution, valued at approximately Euro17 million, is unique in the Balkans and will deliver full voice services including call forwarding, number presentation, televoting, toll free numbers, and pre paid.

Due to its IMS-ready architecture, the solution is also able to deliver innovative convergent services, such as fixed-mobile VPNs. In the future, PTK can enhance its offer to the market with DSL and leased lines services from the same platform.

The official announcement was made during a joint press conference held today, in the presence of the local political authority in Pristina, the main city of Kosovo.

Alcatel will provide an end-to-end solution consisting of broadband multiservice access, an IMS-oriented Softswitch and OSP (Open Service Platform), application server, and a service-aware IP network infrastructure to enable the fast and easy delivery of services. A convergent network management system, that will enable PTK to centrally manage its network, is also part of the solution. Alcatel will also be responsible for network integration.

"We decided on a radical transformation of our network, evolving from an analogue network to a next-generation IP network because a modern communications infrastructure is paramount for the socio-economic growth of our country." said Mr. Besnik Shatri, PTK Fixed Network Director. "In this challenge we needed the support of a world class supplier with proven leadership in IP solutions. Following a rigorous tendering process, we selected Alcatel. This choice provides other benefits to PTK, as Alcatel is already a supplier to the PTK mobile network which provides opportunities for future convergence".

"Kosovo citizens and enterprises will benefit from the services offered by PTK" said Mr. Ambrogio Bandera, Vice President of South East Europe for Alcatel. "The infrastructure we will deploy is one of the most innovative, including the full support of IP-based advanced applications. In particular, it will foster the business of local companies. Moreover, this solution makes it possible to keep OPEX under control, by increasing customer satisfaction, thanks to the ease of introducing new services in the market".
