Picnic Marketing

10:30 AM -- Has your phone company ever bought you a hot dog?

I ask because I've been talking to folks in Keller, Texas, home of the world's most widely watched fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) deployment, about their service from Verizon Communications Inc.

As part of its overall marketing plan in Keller, Verizon had a picnic/block party to celebrate the launch of its service back in October, the Keller folks say. Here's what one source said, via email:

Verizon had a HUGE party in Keller to promote the service. They gave out hot dogs, sodas and had many machines available for families to test drive the system. They even offered a special package for folks who signed up on that day. The event was so big that the morning of the event there were intersections being controlled by police.

Note to SBC Communications Inc. (NYSE: SBC), EchoStar Communications Corp., and Charter Communications (Nasdaq: CHTR), my phone, TV, and high-speed data providers, respectively: I'm not asking for a block party. But if you just happen to be grilling out one afternoon... well, let me know and I'll bring the Chinet.
