Panic Sensors

6:00 PM -- The new meshed wireless sensor network being put together in Cambridge, Mass., by Harvard University sounds intriguing, but I fear that such networks could make us even worse hypochondriacs than we already are.

The Citysense network will be open to the public -- over the Web -- and broadcast local info about weather and traffic congestion. Eventually it will be able to tell you pollution levels and whether "dangerous particles" are in the air.

Which is all well and good if you're asthmatic. I can already think of several perfectly heathly people I know who would simply freak out if informed that there are dangerous particles in the air. It surely doesn't sound good, does it?

But we probably breathe them in every day without a second thought now.
