'Open Access' Gets Closer

5:30 PM -- Pretty interesting that we haven't seen a reaction from Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) yet on Verizon Wireless 's decision this week to drop its lawsuit about the "open access" rules that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) wants for the C-band of the upcoming 700MHz wireless broadband auctions.

The search giant usually comments on the FCC auctions via its public policy blog. Nothing on Verizon's latest move has yet been posted, however.

Nonetheless, the move would seem to make it more likely than ever that Google will bid on the wireless broadband spectrum. CEO Eric Schmidt has already said that Google will "probably bid" on spectrum and could find uses for the bandwidth, as long as it is offered under "open access" rules. (See The 700MHz Impact.)

The auctions are currently due to happen at the end of January 2008.
