FRANKFURT -- Start Amadeus, Germany's largest travel distribution system, has selected Nortel Networks [NYSE/TXS: NT] to build a multiservice ATM/IP backbone infrastructure throughout Germany and manage the migration from their existing X.25 network platform. This system will also provide an Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP-VPN) designed to give Start Amadeus' customers additional security services. Working in conjunction with Nortel Networks and system integrator Siemens, Start Amadeus plans to deploy Nortel Networks Passport 7480 Multiservice Switches to create an all ATM/Internet Protocol (IP) backbone capable of supporting 34 Megabits per second, as well as establish regional sub rings. Under the agreement, Nortel Networks Preside* Multiservice Data Manager (MDM) will be deployed as the management system for the network. Nortel Networks technology is expected to ultimately connect 23 office locations and integrate more than 16,200 travel agencies in Germany through the new ATM/IP backbone ring network.
