Nortel Announces MPLS Strategy

BOSTON -- Nortel Networks (NYSE:NT)(TSE:NT.) plans to drive next generation multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) beyond data networks into every corner of the high-performance Internet with a new strategy announced today. Nortel Networks has put in place a complete, end-to-end approach that will drive a new generation of MPLS from the optical backbone through core IP (Internet Protocol) and wireless networks. This strategy is designed to position service providers for increased profitability by reducing operating costs and facilitating delivery of new, differentiated services such as optical Virtual Private Networks, bandwidth trading and bandwidth on-demand.

"Next generation MPLS will fundamentally address the most difficult challenges in the network today," said Anil Khatod, chief marketing and strategy officer, Nortel Networks. "For today's service providers, it is both costly and time consuming to create and provision new services. And end users are unable to get the services and guaranteed `levels of service' they are willing to pay for. Nortel Networks next generation MPLS solution will address these issues."
