Nokia Slashes Network Division

The continuing downturn in the wireless network infrastructure market is the main catalyst for today's decision by Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) to cut 1,800 staff, more than 10 percent of the total, from its network division (see Nokia Networks Axes 1,800).

According to Thomas Jonsson, communications director for the Finnish firm's network infrastructure business, the cuts will leave the division with approximately 15,000 employees, down from 17,361 at the end of 2002. The majority of the redundancies will affect Finnish staff, where 1,100 positions will be lost. About 100 jobs will be lost throughout the U.S., while the remaining 600 jobs will go in Western Europe, mostly Germany and Italy.

re: Nokia Slashes Network Division What does the network division at Nokia do? I don't know too much about Nokia except that they make good cell phones. Is the routing startup they bought a while ago (Amber?) part of the network division?

re: Nokia Slashes Network Division They bought amber and recently stopped development on the edge router of amber. The personnel are being redeployed on other projects

re: Nokia Slashes Network Division When Nokia decided to acquire Amber Networks for nearly $600 million dollars, it became clear to a lot of people that the fall of Nokia was eminent. Nokia could not have tolerated a loss of $600 million costs plus the cost pof paying Amber workers for nearly two and half years.

The CEO of the company, an Indian guy, did the same thing to Cadence when he sold his ealier company, before Amber. Nokia closed the Amber deal as if it was a goldmine and someone was going to steal it from them.

It is a sad story, but California is full of cheats who sell soddy companies to other companies. It is easy to trace these companies, but many companies are not able to do due dilligence.

re: Nokia Slashes Network Division I couldn't agree more there is so much incompetence it was so funny. I used to deal with them basically Nokia better not quit it's day job they can't compete with the Cisco's of the world they have nothing they are working on some POS called the Flexrouter that's supposed to put them on the map but that thing has gone through more re-designs than a 5 year old building legos. By the way there in bed with Redback who Nokia's claiming they don't want to buy but in a secret meeting Nokia told some employees that the intention was not to buy them but some upper managment or should I say "Downer" think otherwise. Not to mention the culture shock.

re: Nokia Slashes Network Division This division sucks. Most of the Amber guys came from a software servicing company in India. They neither have a vison for a product nor have previous experience in building great product. They came up with CPE kind of an edge router and cheated Nokia. Nokia anyway is not an expert in IP, whatever they claim. These guys are struggling to come up with a GGSN. I heard that these crap amber guys have become product architect now. Software servicing culture will nothelp in product building, marketing.

re: Nokia Slashes Network Division long long ago, but not so long ago, there lived a loser by name 'eagle'.
after he got laid off, he used to vent out his frustrations (at his own incompetence?) in a very similar way....

"Company is doomed"... http://www.lightreading.com/bo...

and then one day Amber got acquired...
http://www.lightreading.com/bo...

looks like eagle may be having some serious competition here.....(or is it just the same old 'eagle' hiding his face?)
