Nokia and Intel Team on WiMAX

Nokia, the top supplier of mobile handsets, and chip giant Intel Corp. announced a cooperation agreement today aimed at accelerating the development, adoption and deployment of WiMAX technology. WiMAX, which stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a broadband wireless technology that provides connectivity over long distances, complementing short-range WiFi solutions. Intel and Nokia say the will work to address power and performance requirements for WiMAX mobile devices, as well as base station infrastructure. The WiMAX technology standard, called IEEE 802.16e, is expected to be completed later this year.
