Nokia Adds Facebook as Friend

7:15 PM -- At Nokia World today, Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) launched a new app that will not only let users update their status on their Facebook accounts but also their location right from their mobile phones. Lyrically styled "Lifecasting With Ovi," the integration with Facebook and GPS capabilities enables social networking on the go. (See Nokia Adds Facebook App.)

The Facebook app will be available from October on the new N97 mini, which the Finnish phone maker describes as a smaller mobile computer than its predecessor, the N97, and as a software update to the N97.

It sounds like a good blend of location-based technology and social networking, but it will have to really work and be easy to use to catch on. Nokia has been on the back foot since Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) arrived on the scene to shake up mobile usage patterns, and it needs to make up the lost ground. Will applications like "Lifecasting" drive more users to its high-end devices? (See Nokia Lays an Egg & Scrambles It Too! and Nokia's New PC.)
