MWC 2009: Show Roundup

LTE was clearly the most important technology showcased at last week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless broadband specification developed by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is now de facto favorite to become the technology that forms the basis of 4G networks, and that sense of ascendence was plainly on display at the show. Big carriers, such as Verizon Wireless and Vodafone Group plc (NYSE: VOD), were on hand to talk deployments, while major vendors, like Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), were there to talk up equipment offerings. (See MWC Preview: LTE Steals the Show .)

But at Europe’s biggest mobile show, which attracted 47,000 visitors this year, according to the GSM Association (GSMA) , other topics also caught the attendees' interest. (See Dancing to Mobile's Tune.)

Femtocells also made a splash in sunny Barcelona. Despite the fact that the market for these small cells is still very much in the anticipation phase, with only a few operators so far delivering these boxes and most focusing on tests and trials for 2009. (See MWC Preview: Femtocells Get Real.)

Some mobile patatas bravas, however, failed to sizzle at the show. New phones using Google (Nasdaq: GOOG)’s Android operating system had been expected to make an appearance from various vendors in attendance, including Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. ’s first handset using the code. The Chinese vendor ended up showing off that puppy under glass on its stand though and announcing that the handset wouldn’t be available until the third quarter. (See MWC Preview: Hola, Android , MWC 2009: Huawei's Android Under Glass, and Android Watch.)

Obviously, with eight halls filled with booths and plenty of extra events spread across the city of Barcelona, there wasn’t time to report on every little thing at the show. So this report will focus on the headline grabbing LTE and femtocell news at the show, along with a roundup of our photos from in and around the event.

re: MWC 2009: Show Roundup
I'm wondering if the issue of end-to-end IP infrastructure was on your radar. As more rich media applications create increasing demand for bandwidth, then perhaps the debate about 4G moves beyond access and re-focuses on backhaul infrastructure. The promise of 4G is the improved network efficiencies of IP -- more details on this topic here http://www.4GequalsIP.com/
