Moto Goes to China

Despite reporting a record $2.3 billion second-quarter net loss on Tuesday, there could be a few bright spots ahead in the handset market for Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT).

The firm says that it is now the leading mobile phone brand in China, beating out Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK). China is the market for device makers to see and be seen in this year (see China's Long March to 3G). The growth potential of the Chinese mobile market is the sort of thing that gives manufacturers sweaty palms.

Motorola has been working with Chinese operators to develop inexpensive phones branded to the carriers' specifications. "Low-end operator spec stuff is likely to be big in China and part of the number one position there," Richard Windsor, a communications equipment analyst with Nomura Holdings Inc. in London, told Unstrung.
