Mesh on the Up & Up?

5:40 PM -- Check out this write-up of a Heavy Reading mesh report on our sister site, Internet Evolution for evidence that mesh is still alive against the odds: Sorry, Haters: Wireless Mesh Soldiers On.

Analyst Patrick Donegan imparts this surprising piece of news about the seemingly stalled muni technology: Mesh gear shipments are still growing, despite some spectacular flameouts of major deployment projects recently

The latest update to Heavy Reading's "Wireless Mesh Equipment Market Tracker" estimates that wireless mesh equipment shipments grew to 112,200 units in the 12 months to June 2007, up from 60,300 in the previous 12-month period.

The demand for mesh isn't coming from massive cities such as Chicago and San Francisco but "from mid-sized towns and cities with smaller populations, kinder building topographies, and, in some cases, more streamlined and effective local government policy makers."

Vendors like BelAir Networks Inc. and Tropos Networks Inc. are the main beneficiaries of this small-town revival, with shipments doubling over the year.
