Megisto Flickers in Europe

Megisto Systems Inc. has scored its first deal in Europe, talking up a small win with Irish carrier Meteor Mobile Communications Ltd.

The vendor is to deploy its Mobile Services Delivery System (MSDS) product for use within Meteor’s prepaid services infrastructure. The kit is designed to enable Meteor to create, rate, and bill for prepaid data applications.

“It’s actually a deal that came out of last year’s 3GSM event,” Carol Politi, VP of marketing, tells Unstrung. “A guy approached us and said he needed prepaid data and content charging. The deal was signed in July. The 'go-live' date is within the next couple of months.”

Megisto is reluctant to disclose financial details of the deal. Meteor is the third largest GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) carrier in Ireland, with a subscriber base of approximately 340,000. The carrier does not own a license to deploy 3G services. Meteor is a subsidiary of Western Wireless Corp. (Nasdaq: WWCA), which was acquired by Alltel Corp. (NYSE: AT) last month (see Alltel Buys Western Wireless).

Although small, today’s deal marks the entry of Megisto into a new region without the help of a reseller partner (see Megisto Gets Asian Reseller, CPDI to Resell Megisto, and LT Distributes Megisto). “We have a lot of activity in Europe and have actually been focusing on Eastern Europe more than Western Europe,” says Politi. “This was a direct deal, which is unusual for us. Most of our deals come through partners these days. In fact, our largest win to date is an unannounced deal in Asia” (with partner PT Lintas Teknologi Indonesia).

“We also have two global unannounced partnership agreements, one with a mediation vendor in Europe that resells our systems and a marketing agreement with a global billing company.”

Megisto has previously announced wins at Malaysian carrier Maxis Communications Bhd. and Singapore’s StarHub (see Megisto Maxes Up and Megisto Gleams at StarHub).
